You can find tile designs for your bathroom floors, walls and shower stalls. Your choice of design is endless.

Deciding Your Approach

Before you being, you need to decide how you're going to approach this project. Are you designing this bathroom with the intention of reselling your home in the near future, or is this your final resting place?

Resale Value Bathroom Design

If you prefer to create a bathroom that will have a good resale value, then you want to design it with prospective buyers in mind. You'll want your new design to have a universal appeal. Understanding what a universal appeal is in design is easy. Think of the homes you've seen either during open house, house warmings or while searching for a new home. There are several questions to ask yourself to gauge whether or not your home has resale value.

  • Does the tile design have a universal appeal or is your choice too personal?
  • Will your selection have longevity? A classic look is timeless and never goes out of style.
  • Did you select a trendy color and design or is your choice one that will age well with new design trends?

Personalized Bathroom Design

If reselling your home is not a concern, then you have the flexibility to create a very personalized bathroom by selecting tile designs based solely on your personal taste. This is a true luxury that many homeowners don't have. If you're one of these lucky ones, then the sky is your limit in design choices. You can mix and match different styles and motifs to create a bathroom that reflect your tastes and give your home a personal touch.

Types of Bathroom Tile Designs

Now that you've decided on your approach to this part of your bathroom design and which direction you want to go, you can begin narrowing down your choices.

Tile Materials

  • Ceramic
  • Concrete
  • Glass
  • Porcelain
  • Stone
    • Granite
    • Limestone
    • Marble
    • Pebble
    • Slate
    • Travertine

Tile Sizes

The object with selecting tile size is not to overpower the space with too big tile squares. This is especially true when you tile the walls, however, if your color selection is relatively consistent, even large tiles climb up the wall for a true spa feel.

You may decide to use only large tile on the walls and a different shaped tile such as an octagon shape for your bathroom floor.

Borders

A tile border is a great way to add interest and introduce another design motif and element. Many times the color selection for the border is lighter, darker or two-toned. To make a dramatic statement, you could choose a different color for this tile.

Accent Pieces

Don't forget that you can use accent pieces of contrasting or matching tile to add a greater design element to your overall tile design. You can place small tile squares as spacer between the larger tiles turned to at an angle for a diamond shape. The same technique can be used on the wall or along a tile border. You can choose from many classic motifs to very stylized ones.

What to Tile

You may be debating over the expense and value of tiling the walls and floors. In a resale market, the general rule of thumb is that tiled bathrooms are in and never decrease in value.

Tiling the Ceiling

A growing number of new home designs are carrying the tile to the ceiling. This gives the bathroom a complete tiled look. A tiled ceiling may be too much for most home owners. If you opt to tile the walls, you can take the tile to the ceiling or three-fourths the height of the wall or to a chair rail height. You'll need a large bathroom to use a non-full wall of tile, however, or risk making your room look chopped up and smaller than it is.

Before You Purchase

The lighting in your home, especially a bathroom that may have little to no natural light, is different from that of a tile store. Take tile samples home to place in your bathroom and see if the color is truly what you want.

More Than Visualizing

You may try to visualize the end result of your new bathroom tile project, but find it difficult to get an overall feel for how the floor mass will look. You can use an old designer secret to see just how the entire floor color will look. Take the tile sample and hold it level with floor and lift in front of you to eye level. Position the tile so while you're holding it, the corner matches up with the opposite corner of the room and train your gaze along the line of the tile. What happens is an optical illusion so all that you see are the corner walls and the tile that appears like a floor.

Shopping for Tile

If you're going to order tile online, you need to see a sample either by going to a local store or ordering a sample before you purchase. Monitor color settings can greatly differ from the authentic color of the tile.

Enjoying Your New Tile

Make sure you understand the manufacturer's recommendation for proper care of the bathroom tile designs carried by the store and begin immediately to enjoy your new bathroom.
