Bay Window Treatments

From LoveToKnow Interior Design

‎ With some creativity, bay window treatments can help solve a challenging window arrangement. Bay windows are often found in breakfast nooks and bedrooms. They usually consist of three or more windows configured in a half hexagon shape. These multiple angles can sometimes cause difficulties when choosing window treatments.

Simple Bay Window Solutions

For a no fuss approach to covering bay windows, you can install the same blind or shade on each window. By using the same materials and colors on each window, it will give the effect of one large unified window area. Although shutters can be one of the priciest window treatments, they provide a traditional, upscale look. Shutters are especially appropriate if your windows have decorative casements or moldings. As a less expensive option, wood blinds will add warmth to a bay window along with excellent light control. Wood blinds with three-inch slats will mimic the look of a plantation shutter.

Shades are another ideal solution for bay window treatments which allow for full views when they are lifted. Roman shades can be placed inside-mount like a blind or mounted outside the window on top of the casing. Either way, roman shades have a clean-lined profile which is versatile enough for various design styles. Roman shades can be constructed of attractive fabric or natural materials like woven woods or bamboo. An alternative to Romans is roller shades which will work nicely inside a bay window.

Dressed Up Bay Window Treatments

By adding valances or draperies to a bay window, you can enhance the room’s drama through the use of color or pattern. Fabric panels or valances can be mounted using a hinged pole or rod set. These sets usually consist of several rods linked together by hinged corner connectors which allow you to adjust the angles to fit your bay window. JCPenney offers several options for bay window hardware.

Custom-made valances or cornice boards are often board-mounted and then installed directly onto the wall. For use as bay window treatments, these valances and cornices are fitted with hinges or may be built using the exact angles of the bay corners. One technique for obtaining the angles is to take two business cards or sturdy paper and hold them together inside the wall angle. Then tape the two cards to each other while maintaining the angle of the two adjoining bay window walls.

If you have inset bay windows, consider mounting a rod with draperies on the outside of the surrounding walls. This will frame out the entire bay window and add emphasis to the area. The bay windows can still be fitted with blinds or shades that coordinate with the main drapery panels. The combination of blinds and draperies will add great energy efficiency to the bay window area. Tie backs or holdbacks usually accompany the drapes, so that it’s easy to secure the panels out of the way. This feature is especially useful for bay window treatments which include window seat cushions.
