Bedroom Designs
From LoveToKnow Interior Design
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 64 million Americans suffer from insomnia, which is why functional, restful bedroom design is so important.
The Most Important Part of Bedroom Designs
The bed is the most important factor in designing a bedroom. Not only is it instrumental in helping you get a decent night's sleep, something that doesn’t come easy to so many people, it also serves as the focal point in a bedroom design. There are so many choices in bed styles and with the proper mattress and box spring, any style can be comfortable.
If you want to create a romantic bedroom, consider a four poster bed or sleigh bed with overstuffed pillows. To create a personal retreat, consider a British colonial inspired headboard. For a feminine bedroom/dressing area, iron frame beds covered in lots of decorative pillows are a good choice. If modern design and high style are your look, than choose an upholstered headboard in a sleek fabric and avoid throw pillows or folded quilts.
Even more important than the bed frame in setting the tone of your room, is the bedding you choose. A zebra print duvet cover on a four poster bed will spice up the décor. If you prefer a traditional look, then opt for a quilt or comforter in a solid color. There are infinite choices in bedding, from 600 thread count luxurious sheets to budget bedding in colorful prints. Choose the bed covering to fit your style and aid in your sleep. Layered beds are visually more interesting than beds covered in standard bedspreads and they allow you to adjust your body temperature by adding and removing covers throughout the night.
Creating a Restful Space
Once you've designed the bed, you can finish your bedroom design. Think about how else you use your bedroom. Sleep experts caution against watching television, reading or using a laptop in bed as these activities prohibit deep sleep patterns necessary for a restful night. Therefore your bedroom design should incorporate areas for these activities if you plan to do them in the bedroom. Whether you are decorating a massive master suite or a cramped room, create a sitting area with a comfortable chair for reading or watching television.
Creating a Unique Design
With the bed frame and bedding chosen and a sitting area established, you can put the finishing touches on your bedroom. If you are creating a romantic room, consider light airy curtains or heavy velvet drapes that pool at the floor. Most importantly, make sure your window treatments block light.
Mirrors and wall hangings should match the rest of your décor. If feminine is your style than add a vanity, adorn the walls with floral prints in soft colors and put a big fluffy rug on the floor. Perhaps you prefer a British Colonial influence. The key to this look is a big ceiling fan, a rattan night table and a sisal rug. Do you prefer more sizzle for your bedroom? Dark wood furniture, rich fabrics such as velvet, and lights on dimmers will help you achieve the look.
If you don't have a strong style preference, the eclectic bedroom could be the perfect solution. All this look requires is surrounding your self with items you love. Don't worry about styles, just choose a bed, bedding, furniture, colors and accessories that make you happy. These items will create a cohesive look because they will all reflect your personality.
No matter what your style, the key to bedroom design is a well-dressed and comfortable bed, few distractions and simple luxuries.
