History of Bedroom Sets

Before the twentieth century, furniture was by and large manufactured as free-standing items as opposed to matching sets. In the 1930’s, Nathan Ancell founded Baumritter Furniture Company and began to build the concept of the bedroom set or suite. His company produced coordinated sets of bedroom furniture which he anticipated would increase sales as design trends dictated new styles of sets to become popular. Ancell’s company later became the Ethan Allen Furniture Company which still offers beautiful bedroom sets today.

Parts of a Bedroom Set

The largest piece of a bedroom suite is the bed and its decorative frame or headboard. Most bed designs are made of wood or metal materials. Popular wooden frames include four poster beds, sleigh beds, and captain beds. Metal beds are commonly made of iron or brass for a timeless, elegant look. Some wooden and metal bed models feature a headboard, footboard, and rails to support the mattress and box spring.

Storage is the other major necessity in a bedroom. Dressers, armoires, chest of drawers, and nightstands are frequently included in matching bedroom sets to meet this need. A basic package usually groups the bed with a dresser and nightstand while the other pieces are available as optional add-ons. Extra nightstands and mirrors are usually offered in the same finish or design to match the set bed and dresser. Occasionally, a company will offer a bedroom set with optional pieces like vanity tables, floor mirrors, blanket chests, benches, or writing tables.

New Ideas for Bedroom Sets

Take your bedroom set to a new level by combining an eclectic mix of furnishings rather than choosing one coordinated set. This makes for a more interesting and dynamic bedroom that will better showcase your personal style.

Eclectic design is about blending items from various eras but with a common unifying theme. Furnishings should connect on some level for a cohesive look. For example, bring together mid-century modern furniture from several different decades with an eye towards repeating clean lines and shapes.

Make your bedroom a true retreat with new pieces to enhance a bedroom set. Adding a chaise lounge, club chair, or settee will give you a serene spot for relaxation and create a cozy reading nook. Make sure to include an accent table and a table or floor lamp for ample comfort while taking it easy.

Bedroom sets for children and teens have come a long way in the style department. Today there are very hip designs available that will have longevity as the child ages. Many youth sets include a bed or bunk system, dresser, nightstand, toy chest, and desk. Choosing a flexible mix of bedroom furniture will ensure that the child’s room remains functional and stylish.
