Breakfast Nook Cushions

From LoveToKnow Interior Design

Breakfast nook cushions are a great way to give this area of your kitchen a completed designer look.

Changing cushions can create new looks.

Getting Started

You may be able to find the perfect cushions for your breakfast nook from a local store or an online shop. If you can’t find what you had in mind, then another option is to have the cushions custom made. You might hire a seamstress or upholstery company to make the cushions or a design service. If you’re talented with a needle and thread, you may opt to sew the cushions yourself.

Breakfast Nook Cushions Styles

The first thing you'll want to do is decide on the style of cushions you want for your breakfast nook. This decision will in part be determined by the kind of furniture you have in your nook. For instance, if you have a booth style arrangement, you’ll want to use a seat cushions and possibly back cushions. In some instance, you may have a banquette style of seating that will require a different kind of cushion since some banquettes have hidden storage underneath the seat. Another possible style of seating is benches in lieu of chairs. You may need to use Velcro strips or ties in order to secure the cushions to the bench and keep from slipping. If using ties, you’ll need to sew a couple along the center edge of your cushion in addition to each end.

Type of Finishes

  • Tufted with or without buttons
  • Rope piping trim
  • Tassel trim on ends
  • Fringe
  • Bead trim
  • Other embellishments

Matching to Your Décor

Now that you've decided the best style of cushion for your breakfast nook, you'll need to shop for the right fabric. This will be more difficult if you’re buying a set of cushions instead of making or ordering a custom set.

Consider the floor, draperies and walls when looking for a fabric to blend into your existing decor. If you're doing a complete re-design of your kitchen, then you may have greater control over your choices. Even if this is an addition to an existing design, you can still find a great fabric that will look as though it was always part of the overall room design. It might just take a little more time to search out the best choice of fabric.

Choice of Material

You'll need to decide what kind of material you want to use for your nook. You can make your nook informal or formal depending on your fabric choice.

Popular Choices

  • Leather
  • Velvet
  • Polished Cotton
  • Duck Cotton
  • Damask
  • Blend
  • Chenille
  • Denim
  • Micro-fiber
  • Suede

Colors and Patterns

Don’t let the wide range of fabric choices confuse you. Before you start looking at swatches, first decide on the most prominent three colors of your room. This will help you to narrow your search before you ever start shopping. Next you’ll want to select the main color for your any pattern choice. If your room is green, blue and yellow, and green has been the most prominent color in pattern, you may wish to accent the blue or yellow, without overpowering the green. It's a balancing act when it comes to color. You’ll be able to tell immediately when you hold a swatch up against your room whether or not it will work.

Patterns will be your next decision. If you have a floral pattern for your draperies, curtains, wallpaper, floor, or rugs, then you may like to use a contrasting stripe, plaid, gingham, or compatible pattern. If you select another patterned fabric, you should either make it smaller or larger than the existing patterns in your kitchen. This will give a good contrast and the two patterns won’t compete with each other. As long as your colors are balanced and the two different patterns look good together, your choices can be varied. The last alternative is that you may opt to forego all patterns and use a solid color for your cushions to become an accent color in your kitchen design.

Don't Forget the Pillows

If your nook is a booth, banquette, or fits snuggly against a corner, you'll want to add pillows to soften the lines and also create a homey inviting look. Take advantage of this design tool to create further interest with solid, floral, stripe, plaid, abstract, and other patterns.

Tying It All Together

Once you have your breakfast nook cushions in place and add the pillows, you can step back and admire your creative work.
