Choosing Cheap Cabin Décor

Cheap cabin décor often focuses on simple, natural items that are easy to find and simple to incorporate into a cabin or any home. In fact, you don't have to live in a real log cabin to enjoy this decorating style. Whether your cabin is a vacation home or your permanent house, or you simply love the log cabin look, you can create a cozy home with just a few simple touches. Before you dive into your decorating project, consider the following:

  • What kind of theme or motif do you want to echo throughout the rooms of your cabin?
  • Do you prefer a quaint country look with country blues and rusts?
  • Are you a collector of animal heads that you or your spouse has had mounted?
  • Do you want a more masculine or rustic look?
  • Do you love the look of gingham, or do you prefer leather?
  • What objects or patterns please you?
  • Do you prefer bold colors or more natural tones?
  • Do you love the look of Native American patterns and accessories, or do you lean more toward a traditional, colonial look?

Consider all of these questions before you begin looking for decorating ideas and items.

Living Room Ideas

It's often easier to start with one room, complete that room, then move on to another room as you decorate or redecorate a home. Cheap cabin décor can sometimes even be free if you use items found in nature. If you want the cabin look for your living room, family room, or den, consider using the following:

  • Natural accents like pinecones, holly, dried grapevines, and berries work well in a cabin-themed room. Use caution when bringing berries into your home, however, as some may be poisonous.
  • Instead of the traditional curtain rods, consider using long sticks. These can be used in their original state, or you can scrape the bark off and add a glossy sealant for a more finished look. Hang curtains using ties or hooks.
  • Place a large rustic vase of dried grasses on the mantel or coffee table, and add a bowl of fruits, like apples and oranges. Sprinkle some nuts throughout the bowl as well.
  • Add cast iron pieces, wicker baskets, overstuffed pillows, and a few well-placed lamps also in cast iron or metal.
  • Choose a particular motif to echo throughout the room, such as stars, bears, pinecones, trees, etc. Stencil the pattern on the walls, lampshades, pillowcases, etc.

Kitchen Ideas

Create a cozy kitchen reminiscent of log cabins from centuries past with the following ideas:

  • Stack some small logs in a wicker basket in the corner of the room.
  • Add a basket of fruit and nuts as a centerpiece.
  • Hang bundles of dried wildflowers from the ceiling.
  • Search antique stores for old chairs, butter churns, cooking utensils, etc., and display these around the room. Don't bother touching them up with paint. If you find these items, you'll want them to keep their "old" look.

Bed and Bath Ideas

Extend the look of cabin quaintness to your bedroom and bathroom with these suggestions:

  • Lean an old, wooden ladder against the wall, and drape towels or extra bed linens on it.
  • Create the look of old by refinishing a rocking chair, wooden stool, or trunk with a distressed look.
  • Set out wicker baskets to hold extra throws, towels, and bath supplies.
  • Add a handmade rug on the floor, and place some candles around the room.

Decorating your home with a cabin décor is simple and inexpensive to do!
