Commercial Interior Design - What Is It?
Commercial interior design refers to interior design in places of business, like retail shops, doctor’s offices, and corporate offices. While specific style choices like [[Basics of Color Design| colors] and themes are important in commercial design, the overall focus is on function. Commercial interior design should start with questions like:
- How can I make this space as conducive to productivity as possible?
- How can I create the best possible customer experience in this space?
With those answers in mind, stylistic design specifics should flow from those points.
Commerical Interior Design Step by Step
If you’re ready to get your commercial interior design project underway, then there are a few steps you should follow:
Make a Plan
Any good interior design project starts with a plan that includes a clear idea of the desired finished product and a reasonable course of action to reach the result. Try approaching your plan like this:
- Identify your objectives. Are you creating office space in which people will be working at desks? Then you need to consider things like the acoustics of the room and whether you want to office to feel open or offer plenty of private work space to the staff. Are you designing a retail shop? Then consider things like lighting and where to place fixtures so customers can browse and move through the store with ease.
- Set a timetable. Most commercial interior design projects need to happen on a set schedule so the business is not disrupted.
- Set a budget. Commercial interior design budget planning doesn’t have to be different than budgeting for any other design project, other than larger numbers are usually involved. Budget for each portion of the job; labor, paint, accessories, etc, and then stick to it.
- With your budget in mind, start shopping. Even if you don’t buy everything at once, you don’t want any surprises like finding out the paint color you had in mind is backordered for six months two weeks before the project needs to be finished.
Execute your Plan
Sure, that sounds obvious, but executing your plan may not only involve you. Are there any jobs that need to be completed that require a skilled laborer? Then you need to hire the workers and supervise their progress to make sure everything is coming in on time. Do you need professional advice about lighting, acoustics, or phone and internet connections? Make sure everyone you need to consult on your plan is executing your plan as you need them to.
If you’re new to design, but can’t bring in a professional, interior design software may be able to help you lay out your rooms and experiment with different ideas.
