Definition of Contemporary Track Lighting

Track lighting is a lighting system where small light fixtures are attached at intervals along a continuous track that contains electrical conductors. It connects multiple lights along its length and is capable of manipulation for the desired effect.

While traditionally used on ceilings, these modern fixtures can also be mounted to walls for a sconce-like effect. In some contemporary spaces, track lights are hung with rods or cables from particularly high places like vaulted or cathedral ceilings.

Modern track lighting has moved away from the clunky styles of the past, and fixtures are now available in a wide variety of sleek and sophisticated contemporary designs. There are many options for the track itself as well as the size, style, and color of the light fixtures.

Advantages of Track Lighting Systems

  • Track lighting is versatile and comes in a wide variety of styles, sizes, and shapes.
  • These systems allow the users to manipulate the direction and focus of the light, aiming light at different areas. Use them to highlight artwork, architectural details, workspaces, and more. This is particularly useful if furniture and accessories are often rearranged.
  • As a modern lighting system, they suit newly built homes beautifully as well as renewed or renovated spaces in existing homes. (Note: these lights tend to look a little out of place in traditionally decorated spaces.)
  • They can provide general overhead lighting for an entire room as well as specified illumination for designated areas.
  • Tracks are easy to install on ceilings when remodeling or re-decorating, as power can be pulled from an existing fixture.
  • You can customize them to fit a particular space. For example, in a space that needs a lot of light such as a kitchen, a U-shaped or square-shaped configuration can be installed to provide maximum illumination.
  • Heads are available in large, medium, small, and miniature sizes, and many different colors are available.

Where and When to Use Track Lighting

  • Track fixtures are great to use in rooms where space is at a minimum and there is little room for table or floor lamps. For instance, track lighting works very well when incorporated into bathroom design. Not only does it provide overhead illumination, the heads can be positioned so that they're aimed at a mirror, or other area where more light is desired.
  • Contemporary kitchen designs also benefit greatly from mounted lighting systems. Individual lights can be directed towards countertops, sinks, stoves, or any other work areas in the room.
  • They are an excellent option for a hallway or large closet. Aim the lights at artwork hanging in a hallway, or hanging clothes and shelves in a closet.
  • Consider installing it in a room that already has an existing electrical box in the ceiling but needs more light. Replace an outdated hanging fixture with track lighting in a home office. Contemporary lighting that is multidirectional is both practical and stylish for workspaces.

No matter where you decide to install these lights, make sure that they do not interfere with doors, cabinets, or anything else. Rooms with low ceilings are not generally good candidates for this type of fixture since there's always the risk of people bumping their heads.

Purchasing Lighting

Track lighting is widely available in lighting and hardware stores such as the Home Depot. Do some comparison shopping before settling on one. Consider visiting a site like lighting.com for more information about styles and manufacturers.

When purchasing, buy all of the parts from one manufacturer since individual components are often not interchangeable. Also, make sure that additional tracks, connectors, and heads are available in case you want to expand the system later. While the systems are manufactured in specific lengths, they can be joined via connectors. One of the advantages of these types of lights is their ability to adapt as lighting needs change.

You may want to select the type of bulb you prefer before selecting the heads and track for your system. Make sure the bulbs are readily available in your area. Consider the type of illumination you want in the room before deciding on what type of bulb you'll use.

Always get advice from a trained electrical salesperson about what is needed for installation. While some choose to install this type of system themselves, always consider safety first, and if there is any doubt whatsoever, hire a qualified electrician to do the job. Check with your local government office to see if any permits are required to upgrade the lighting system in your home.

The best compliment to any design scheme is great lighting. It can help to define a space, set the mood, and of course, provide the appropriate illumination for designated spaces. If flexibility and adaptable illumination is what you're looking for, a contemporary track lighting system may do the trick.
