Country Wallpaper Border

From LoveToKnow Interior Design

A country wallpaper border can be an excellent way to enhance a room. The appropriate wallpaper border will vary widely according to your personal taste and the specific type of country decor you prefer. Country farmhouse decor, for example, is quite different from French country decor; a different type of border would be appropriate for each style.

Common Country Wallpaper Borders

Country wallpaper often features animals, symbols, and pictures associated with farm life. Often the images are rendered with little detail to create a more rustic appearance.

‘’’Animals:’’’ Animal borders often feature livestock such as cows and chickens. This is more appropriate for a farmhouse country decor. ‘’’Symbols:’’’ Stars, flags, and other patriotic symbols are common on wallpaper borders appropriate for country houses. ‘’’Vegetables and Flowers:’’’ Grapes, daisies, and wheat are all common items to be found on wallpaper borders.

Matching Paint to Wallpaper

Most wallpaper borders are used in conjunction with a painted wall. It is best to plan to paint the wall before you install the border. This will allow you to achieve the best color compliment to the wallpaper you will be installing.

While you could always choose a color on the border and ask a paint technician to duplicate it, consider choosing a complimentary or contrasting color instead. This choice may require some experience in color theory, so consult outside sources if you are unsure of the type of colors that would complement the border.

Applying Wallpaper Borders

Wallpaper borders are the easiest types of wallpaper to hang as long as some care is taken before beginning. With few seams and little matching required, it can be an excellent project for someone interested in using wallpaper for the first time.

First, you should decide where you want to install the border. A wallpaper border can be installed so it bisects the wall horizontally or abutts the seam between wall and ceiling. Some wallpaper boards are installed just above the baseboards, for a more subtle appearance. Before deciding the best location for your border, look for any obstacles that will require you to cut the border horizontally. Trying to squeeze a border above a door may make your room appear cramped.

If you do decide to install the border near the ceiling, make sure that the ceiling is level in all places. A straight border may draw attention to an uneven ceiling edge, but slight adjustments can minimize this hazard. For borders installed in the center of the wall, a level is essential to ensure that the border is straight.

Once you have made marks to indicate where the border should go, it can be installed just like standard roll wallpaper. If you must use multiple pieces to cover a single wall, be sure to match the seams.

Other Border Options

If the country wallpaper border options available will not work with your walls or aesthetic sensibilities, there are other options available to create a rustic border on your walls.

‘’’Stenciling:’’’ Stenciling requires much more work than other types of wall borders, but the effects can be well worth the time and effort required. If you are inexperienced with stenciling, consider creating a rustic design that will hide small flaws.

‘’’Architectural Trim:’’’ Molding that is correctly finished can easily fit within a country style interior design. Consider staining trim instead of painting it to avoid a more traditional appearance.

Final Considerations

Adding a wallpaper border can be a great way to add a design detail to your walls. Given the low cost and minimal work involved to install a border, this is a great project for someone who is just beginning to personalize their space.
