Design a Feng Shui Nursery
From LoveToKnow Interior Design
If you are looking for a way to make sure your new little baby has a peaceful and restful room in which to rest, you might want to consider tips to design a Feng Shui nursery. Feng Shui for nursery design is less concerned with things like the style of the furniture, the color of the bedding, or the decorating theme of the room and instead addresses ways to make sure your baby has an environment which is calming for them and that fosters their growth. Whether you are a die hard Feng Shui follower or a little skeptical about the whole thing, the principles that are followed to design a Feng Shui nursery are food for thought for any parent-to-be.
What is Feng Shui?
Feng Shui (translation: wind water) has become a buzz word of sorts within interior design in recent years, but there is a lot of confusion about what exactly it is. In a nutshell, according to the principles of Feng Shui, energy flows through all interior areas, and designing rooms so that the energy flow, or chi, is not interrupted is good for emotional and physical health. Feng Shui has its roots in Chinese Taoist philosophy, and while it is new to the “Western” world, Feng Shui has been used in Asian cultures for centuries.
To achieve this free flow of energy, Feng Shui design advice offers suggestions of how to place furniture, which colors to choose for the walls, and how to maintain a room. The direction furniture and accessories face, and their placement in relationship to each other, is very important in Feng Shui.
The benefits of Feng Shui design for nurseries is that, according to the philosophy, the right design will encourage creativity in your child and give them a sense of safety and comfort that helps foster their relationship with you. Further, Feng Shui design will create a nursery that is not too busy or over stimulating for your little one, so they will rest easily and peacefully (and maybe you will even get a little more shut eye yourself!).
How to Design a Feng Shui Nursery
If you want to give Feng Shui nursery design a try in your home, you can do so relatively easily. Likewise, you can also make it work with many of the themes and ideas you may already have in mind for your baby’s nursery. Give these ideas a try to create your Feng Shui baby haven:
- Choosing the right room – According to Feng Shui, where your nursery is located in the home makes a big difference. In a perfect world, a boy’s room will be on the east side of your house, and a girl’s room will be on the south side. If that is not possible, you should at least make sure the nursery is not over an empty room (like a garage) and is not near the noisy parts of the home.
- Consider the color – Feng Shui principles have a lot to say about colors; different colors are said to stimulate different parts of your life. For babies, according to Feng Shui, the best color of the walls is white; the blank canvas will ramp your baby’s creativity up. If white is too ho-hum for you, you can paint the walls a color, but keep things soft. If you go for too bright a color, your baby will be encouraged to stay awake. You can go for any colors you like for the bedding, but generally soft and muted is good here, too.
- Use blinds on the windows, so you can control how much sunlight comes into the room. Very bright sunlight will be unsettling for baby.
- A place for everything and everything in its place – Nothing interferes with energy flows like a room full of clutter. Keep your baby’s room neat and tidy.
