Deciding to Use Designer Floral Fabrics

If you want to create a designer look for your room, then choosing a floral fabric will give you an elegant and airy décor. You can use a floral pattern in any room in your home. The first thing you'll want to decide is the color palette. Once you've decided on the colors, you're ready to start browsing through samples.

Finding Fabrics

There are several ways you can shop for fabrics. The best way is to shop in person. This will allow you to view the actual fabric before purchasing.

All Lighting Isn't Equal

Most stores have fabric samples that you can take home to see how the fabric will look in your décor. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to purchase a fabric without taking a sample home. The reason this can turn out disappointing is because the lighting in the store won't be the same as in your home. Lighting, especially fluorescent lighting, can make colors look differently than natural lighting or incandescent lighting. You may think you're purchase a soft pink floral pattern but when you get the cut material home discover the pink is more of a coral hue. Once fabric is cut from the bolt, many fabric stores won't take it back.

Online Fabric Purchases

If you're purchasing fabric from an online store, you can usually request samples for a nominal shipping fee. It's worth the extra expense to make sure the fabric you're purchasing looks like the online photo.

Types of Floral Designs

There are thousands of floral designs from which you can choose your fabric. Once you've decided on the color palette you want to use for your design project, you need to decide on the type of pattern that will work best in your room.

Large Floral Patterns

Large floral patterns are fun to use in design, especially when you want a bold ambiance. The size of the flower can often make a design statement to create a dramatic flare for your decor.

One such popular choice is a dramatic stylized Red Poppy. This fabric is a single red poppy on a crisp white background. This repeat pattern is very large at 25 inches. If you're considering using the fabric for a comforter, draperies or pillows, be aware that it's available in 110 inch widths so you can avoid seams.

Tiny Flowers

Tiny flower patterns offer a romantic feel to a decor and are great for an English Garden design.

Abstract Floral

Abstract floral patterns can be used in combination with other fabrics. The abstract design colors are essential for creating the right blending of patterns and color.

Many Other Designs

There are many other floral designs and patterns for designer fabrics. Some floral designs have other elements such as exotic birds or song birds. Other animal and plant life may also be part of the overall floral design.

How To Best Use Floral Patterns

When designing your room, you can use a variety of design techniques to accent your floral fabrics.

Mix and Match

Mix and match is one of the oldest design techniques for using floral patterns. You can use two floral patterns as long as they aren't the same size. For example, you may choose a pink and yellow floral design that has a 22 inch pattern repeat. You can use a much smaller floral design like a rosebud or pansy that has a 4 inch or 6 inch repeat pattern. The key to making this kind of floral combination work is color. You'll need to select a pattern that will blend or one that achieves a perfect contrast. The main concern when using two floral prints together is avoiding the fatal mistake of the two patterns competing for your attention whenever you walk into the room.

Many times a floral pattern that is of a light and dark hue of the same color can add depth to your room's color palette without becoming too much pattern. You'll want to be sure that the colors blend well with your main floral print.

Add Striped Patterns

An excellent way to highlight and contrast your floral fabrics is to use color-coordinated stripes. You can use more than one stripe, especially if you're using only one color of striped material. By example, you could choose to use a green stripe and a pink stripe to use with your pink and yellow floral pattern. You could also use a yellow stripe that either matches or is one hue lighter than the yellow in the pattern. You may also prefer to use a stripe and floral combination pattern.

Other Patterns You Can Use

You can also use checks, plaids, and even other patterned materials with your floral designs. As long as your colors match and the patterns don't compete, you can have a very interesting room of patterns and designs with your floral fabric as the centerpiece of your room decor.

Texture Adds Depth

Another consideration in your floral patterns is fabric texture. You don't want the texture of your fabrics to clash anymore than you'd want the colors or patterns. You can use contrasting texture interspersed throughout your room to given needed depth to your overall design.

Don't Forget Solid Colors

In the mixture of your designer floral fabrics and stripes, don't neglect solid color fabrics. These serve to give your eyes a resting place to break up the multiple patterns. Balance is the deciding factor of a successful blending of florals, stripes, checks, plaids, and solids.
