How to: Elegant Master Bathrooms

With fast-paced busy lives, it's no wonder people are retreating to their bathrooms as sanctuaries of rest and relaxation. You can transform your dull bathroom into a place of elegance.

Transition from Master Bedroom to Bathroom

Style, theme and design of your bathroom needs to repeat a few of the same design elements from your master bedroom in order to achieve design continuity. You can use only a few design elements or repeat the entire color and design scheme in your bathroom by using the same patterns and accents.

Whichever design choice you make, you want the design to flow naturally from your master bedroom into your master bathroom. If your bedroom design is an Italian Renaissance then you don't want to create a country style bathroom.

Floor Treatment

You need to decide on the flooring and the walls since these are your largest surface areas. Some things to consider when selecting floor treatments. You can set the theme and mood of your bathroom by your choice of floor material.

  • Tile makes an excellent choice for an elegant statement. Choose from thousands of styles, colors and textures such as:
    • Marble
    • Hand-painted Italian tiles
    • Tumbled stone tile
  • Wood flooring is available in water resistant finishes. The right fixtures and cabinets give warmth and richness to your bathroom design.
    • Bamboo
    • Reclaimed wood planks
    • Hardwoods
    • Cork

Rugs

Depending on the size of your master bathroom, you can add a splash of color and elegance with an area rug or series of smaller rugs. You can make elegant statements with several styles:

  • Persian
  • Aubusson
  • Pile
  • Oriental

Wall Treatment

The sky is the limit for wall treatment. Use only one or mix several elements to your master bathroom depth.

  • Paint
  • Wallcovering
  • Marble or Stone Tile
  • Mosaic tile
  • Mural

You can break up the wall space of a large bathroom by using two different elements like tile and paint or wallcovering.

If your bathroom is small, limit it to one element. Light walls make a room appear larger. Light-colored paint or tile works best for small spaces. Consider adding mirrors to give the illusion of a larger space.

Light Fixtures

Introduce some of the same lighting elements from your master bedroom into your master bathroom.

  • If you have a chandelier in your bedroom, use a smaller version or a pair of a similar design in your bathroom.
  • Wall sconces from your bedroom can be repeated on a smaller scale in your bathroom.
  • When using a different light fixture style in your bathroom keep continuity by using the same kind of finish.
  • Always consider the design and style of the light fixtures if you decide to go with something different in the bathroom.

Window Treatments

Curtains, shades or blind? Select a fabric for your window treatment that matches or complements your master bedroom. Think about the overall effect you want.

  • A combination of curtains and shades can create interest and texture with a mix of patterns and solids or patterns and stripes.
  • Blinds can lend an elegant look when used with draperies or curtains that soften the horizontal lines.
    • Choose a color for your blinds instead of a stark white to add warmth and depth to your window treatment.

Designer Cabinets and Sinks

Custom cabinets and designer sinks are the ultimate in designing your bathroom, but can be very costly. If you're working with a limited budget, you can still achieve a customized look at a fraction of the cost.

  • Find the kind of cabinets you want.
  • Search the internet for wholesale cabinets.
  • Cabinets pieces. You can buy individual lavatory cabinets that look like furniture and place them in your bathroom for a custom cabinet design at about half the cost.
  • Remove doors from existing cabinets and replace with new ones of a different design.
Choose type of floor and wall treament first.

Tub or Spa

The tub has come a long way in design and shapes.

  • Garden tub
  • Jet tub
  • Spa or whirlpool tub
  • Clawfoot or hip tub
  • Round, oval, rectangular, or square

Showers and Saunas

You can buy a simple shower and dress it up with an elegant shower curtain or you can invest in one of the newer steam showers. If you have room for a shower and a sauna, there's a wide range of styles and choices.

Bath Fixtures and Toilets

There is a wide range of bath fixtures and toilets.

  • Add a bidet for the ultimate luxury.
  • Build a water or toilet closet for your toilet.
  • Heated, lighted and cushioned toilets are available.

Fireplaces Add a Romantic Style

This can add a second source of heat as well as a romantic element to your new elegant bathroom. If you already have a fireplace in the bedroom wall of the bathroom, it will be easier to connect to the flue. You can opt for a see-through fireplace that can be enjoyed in both the bedroom and bathroom. If you don't have an existing chimney, there are all kinds of fireplace solutions on the market that can give you the fireplace effect without the major expense of building a fireplace.

  • Ventless gas log fireplace
  • Holographic fireplaces
  • Gel fireplaces
  • Electric fireplaces

Walk-in closets, dressing and lounge areas

These are all components of a very elegant bathroom and are found often in new construction. If you have an adjoining smaller bedroom that you can spare, then use it to create an elegant dressing and lounge area off of your new bathroom. If your bathroom space is too small, then consider using that room for a bigger and more elegant bathroom.

Accent Pieces, Paintings and Pictures

You can add decorative bathroom accents, paintings, photos, and pictures to your bathroom. Choose frames that go with your overall design and style. Designing elegant master bathrooms doesn't mean you need a big budget and large square footage.
