Interior Design Degrees Online

With the advent of the internet, many colleges and schools are offering degrees online. In fact, some schools are based solely on the internet, or just have a few educational centers spread throughout the country.

Before signing up for a course of study, consider the following questions when evaluating interior design degrees online:

  • What accreditation does the school have?
  • Can I focus my studies in a certain area?
  • Is live instruction/help available online or through the telephone?
  • How much is tuition?
  • What kind of financial aid is available?
  • What is the placement rate for graduates?

Most programs offer different levels of training, whether just a certificate, an associate’s degree, or a bachelor’s degree. Taking courses for a lower level certificate can often transfer towards a higher level degree later on at the same school.

Several schools that offer online degrees in interior design include Rhodec International, Penn Foster Career School, The Art Institute Online, and Westwood College. Of course, there are many more schools; but taking a closer look at these will give you an idea of what an online degree program involves.

Rhodec International

Rhodec offers three levels of courses: associate diploma course, diploma course, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in interior design.

The Associate Diploma course is a not-for-credit certificate course. Twelve lessons are given with supplemental assignments. Areas of study include elements and principles of design, color theory, materials, sample board presentation, measuring, window treatments, and lighting.

The Diploma course can be finished within three years. Topics include materials, history, drafting, design, color, furniture and fittings, construction of interiors, and professional practice. Tests are given along the way, and a final test with portfolio is required to receive a diploma.

The Bachelor of Arts degree adds one year of study to the diploma course through an agreement with London Metropolitan University. The program is available to those who graduate Rhodec with a degree grade of Upper Merit or higher. An option of actually attending the school in London is available to those who wish to do so.

Penn Foster Career School

A career diploma is available at Penn Foster in interior decorating. Students who get finish the course are ready to start entry level jobs working in homebuilding, hotels, Office Design|offices, or can become an entrepreneur. Areas of focus include design and color, and flooring, wall, and window treatments. More information on the career diploma is available upon request.

The Art Institute Online

The Art Institute Online offers a Diploma in Residential Planning and a Bachelor’s of Science in Interior Design. Admission for the Diploma program is a high school GPA of 1.5 or higher, a GED score of 225 or higher, or an associate’s degree or above. For the Bachelor’s program, a high school GPA of 2.0 or higher, GED score of 225 or above, or an associate’s degree or higher is required.

The Bachelor’s of Interior Design degree program is 180 credits. General education and program elective courses are required along with courses in things like fundamentals of design, basic drafting, space planning, AutoCAD, professional practice, portfolio, and an internship.

The Residential Planning Diploma requires 36 credits to complete, which can be applied later towards the Bachelor’s degree. Courses include drawing, color theory, space planning, residential design studio, and more.

I am very interested in interior design and party planning but not sure where to start. I have seen schools online but don't really see a course that has both above. Can you help me or direct me to where I can find something like that. I have always loved to go above and beyond in a space and especially for parties and so on. Every one always comes to me when they are planning or something or trying to change their place. I would love to start a business of my own. Please advise thanks!

Hi Kathi - Even if you don't want to pursue a degree, taking a few classes would be your best bet to learn the basics. I'm not sure which of those schools offer distance learning programs or if you live near any of the schools you listed, but it would defintely be worth checking out a class or two. Some schools will let you learn from home at your own pace, which can be a good option if you're busy and need the freedom to set your own schedule. Your local community college can also be a good resource for taking some basic design courses. Good luck!
