Question
I don't like the way my entertainment center juts out in my living room. Are there any creative alternatives to stowing my television where it's accessible but not intrusive?
A Necessary Eyesore
Let’s try to work with what you already have and also explore some alternative ideas for stashing your television in a more pleasing way.
- Soften it - Add medium to tall sized plants on either side of the entertainment center to soften the transition between the cabinet and the wall.
- Make it smaller – If your entertainment center has attached bookcases or side cabinets, consider breaking up the unit. You can reuse the bookcases somewhere else in the room, or use them in another area of the house.
- Corner it – Angle your entertainment center in a corner so that it has a built-in feel. You might even invest in a cabinet or armoire that is specifically constructed for corner use.
- Paint it – Make your entertainment center “disappear” by painting it the same color as your walls. This will down play its perceptible size and also give it a custom built-in look. Your local paint or hardware store will be able to match your color from a few chips of paint off the wall or from an old paint can.
- Replace it – You can always get rid of your existing entertainment center and replace it with a television stand or cart that is much less obtrusive. These nifty stands and carts have come a long way, but their structural designs are typically a better fit for modern or industrial style interiors.
- Upgrade it – The ultimate alternative is to purchase a flat-panel plasma or LCD television. These sleek beauties can be mounted right on the wall, saving tons of space in a room. There are even cabinets which house the flat-screen inside until you push a button and the TV rises out of the cabinet top.

I just bought a new house and the living room is rectangle and trying to figure out a way to best arrange the furniture. Is there any way that you can have a TV stand in the middle of the room? what would you do with all the wires. Since the room is long, I need to bring the TV closer, but where do the wires go, would it look silly? Thanks so much :)
-- Contributed by: amberI recently bought a condo and I have a combo living room/dining room with a long, wide rectangular shape from North to South. I want to place our flatscreen TV on the Northern end of the space (the wall has electrical and video outlets in the middle of the wall) but the fireplace is angled on the NorthEast corner of the room. Now I am confused about where to place our sectional sofa. There is a small bedroom entrance on the East side of the room right next to the diagonal fireplace and two large doublesided windows on the West side of the room. I am concerned about the flow into the room because the hallway entry is on the SouthEast side of the room, around the corner from the bedroom entrance. A small dining room table will fit in the Southern end and my kitchen is just to the East of that. Do you have any suggestions for the placement of our sofa sectional?
-- Contributed by: PaulI recentley just bought a new home. We have alot of rooms now that there is a finished basement in this home. We put our furniture in the basement and in the living room , we also have a formal dining room with a tuscan rustic look with the chunky chopped wood chaird and table. We also have the rustic style coffee table and end tables and my furniture matches perfectley with a twitch of modern all the colors in my palet are browns, tans and blacks.. My problem is I have nothing to put in the front room. I just think more furniture will be too much. Is there anything I can put in there. I want something simple. I thought maybe a circle table in the center with a fun arrangment. Im stumped. Thank you so much for helping!
