Minimalist Houses

From LoveToKnow Interior Design

Minimalist houses seek to eliminate clutter and decoration in favor of a functional, elegant space. While minimalist architecture varies in terms of severity, many people find that minimalist home design helps create a feeling of tranquility in the space.

Principles of Minimalist Houses

Minimalism is not always easily identified, as other styles such as post modern interior design, often mimic it. However if a house follows most of the following principles, it is probably a minimalist house.

Limited Color Palette

Most minimalist houses will follow a strict color palette that is made of primarily neutral colors. One or two bold non neutrals may be added to emphasize a particular detail or object, but in general the colors will be restricted to tones of white, beige, and gray.

Use of Platonic Forms

Simple geometric shapes are often created or used in the construction of the furniture introduced into the space. Edges are crisp, clean, and precise and there is very little ornament.

Minimal Accessories

Visually complex items, such as bookshelves, paned windows, or even patterned pillows or drapes are limited. Most of these elements are carefully concealed within pieces of furniture.

Appreciation of Negative Space

In general, minimalist houses have less furniture and other accessories than other houses. Instead, an appreciation of empty space is emphasized, with each piece of furniture carefully placed to do a specific function.

Lack of Texture

Most minimalist interiors also seek to limit varying textures. If a particular pattern is readily apparent in a minimalist house, it is there to emphasize a specific detail. Even if a texture is emphasized, the textures will be restricted to only one or two pieces.

Decorating A Minimalist House

If you own a minimalist piece of architecture, you may have a difficult time finding appropriate pieces to decorate the space.

Furniture

Contemporary Japanese furniture, some Art Deco pieces, and Dutch modern pieces are all excellent choices for the minimalist house. Of course, minimalist furniture manufacturers are also common and can be found in many high design magazines. Although many pieces appear to be uncomfortable, that is often not the case. Consider taking a trip to a furniture showroom to try out different styles of furniture to find the correct fit for you.

Upholstery and Drapes

Fabrics should be in a neutral color with very little texture. Plan on spending a bit more on fabric for a minimalist house: plain fabrics that are inexpensive often look cheap when used without other adornment. Natural fibers should also be used whenever available: linen and wool are popular in minimalist designs.

Paint

Neutral paint, perhaps with a single accent wall painted a different color, is common in minimalist design. Gloss and semi gloss paint is often rejected favor of flat paint. While this type of paint will further the minimalist decor, it will also highlight any imperfections on the walls and be difficult to clean.

Storage

Storage is an essential part of minimalist house decor. While home design magazines may encourage you to clear clutter be discarding it, most people have possessions that are incompatible with minimalism. For this reason, storage that conceals items that do not fit your decor is important. Built in storage is the most practical for minimalist interiors, as long as it is steam lined to fit with the rest of the house.

Final Notes

Minimalist houses can be difficult to decorate if you do not like minimalist interior design. However, just because the house is minimalist does not mean that your interior design must follow the architecture. Many contemporary designers see the value in eclectic styles that complement one another, rather than matching each other. Bolder interior designers may suggest juxtaposing heavily ornate Victorian pieces with a minimalist house. No matter what the preferred interior design style, the most important consideration is that it fits your lifestyle and personal preference.
