Nautical Toddlers Room

From LoveToKnow Interior Design

Children like to have fun in their bedroom or playroom, and one enjoyable way to decorate their space is by creating a nautical toddlers room. Not only will your child be enchanted by their beach themed room, you will find that it can grow with them as well.

Ahoy, Matey!

Due to hit movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, an extremely popular nautical toddlers room design makes use of a pirate theme. The best bet is to paint your walls in neutral tones that will go with any future décor changes. You can also add a chair rail and paint an accent color, like deep ocean blue, just on this lower section. It will be much less area to paint if the color scheme changes. You might also consider installing rich wood paneling or faux wood wallpaper under the chair rail for a rustic, ship plank feel.

You can then add pirate wall art or stick-ups to play up the nautical toddlers room theme. Add a few scale models of pirate ships displayed on floating shelves and some canvas bedding or a window treatment that looks like sailcloth. You can accentuate this bedding or window ensemble with grommets and rope accents for more realism and added detail. Don’t forget the stuffed parrot or Jolly Roger flag!

A Day at the Beach

For a more traditional take on a nautical toddlers room, think about a Cape Cod, sailing, or tropical theme. If you install chair rail, you can insert beadboard paneling which will instantly give the room a fresh, seaside feeling. The addition of tasteful, timeless accessories like sailboats and seashells will ensure the design has longevity. Other enjoyable accessory ideas include anchors, life preservers, marine netting, and fishing poles.

Since shells can be potential choking hazards, consider using shadow boxes or sealed containers to display the tiny treasures. A simple, nautical bedroom usually showcases a subtle color palette of sandy browns or golds along with pale to deep blues. Other marine design motifs can be brought in as well. Think about cabana stripes on bedding or as a painted wall finish. A playful flip-flop theme is especially delightful for a little girl’s bedroom design. This colorful flip-flop theme can be found in bedding, wallpaper, and bathroom accessories for a complete look.

Another direction to take a beach theme in nautical toddlers room is to go tropical. Think about faraway, exotic destinations like Hawaii, the Caribbean, or the Pacific islands. Bring in art and accessories featuring palm trees, coconuts, pineapples, surf boards, and grass huts. You can also use beach theme daybed covers which have some of these design elements. There are plenty of coordinated bedding sets on the market which have a Hawaiian or surfing theme. An actual surfboard can be used as a whimsical headboard or cut it in half for use as a wall-mounted shelf.
