New Ideas for Wallpaper

From LoveToKnow Interior Design

If your only exposure to wallpaper has been the disco variety from the 1970’s, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that there are numerous new ideas for wallpaper. In fact, wallcoverings are back in vogue, as faux painting takes a backseat.

Wallpaper Redefined

Dating back to the ancient Chinese who invented paper, wallpaper had humble beginnings as simple rice paper sheets. During the middle ages in Europe, small but colorful sheets of paper were popular with royal courts and lead to the founding of paperhanger guilds. During the 1700’s, London became the central hub of wallpaper fashion, eventually influencing colonial America. Wallpaper hit the mainstream during the Victorian era of the 1800’s when machine produced papers made this type of wall treatment much more affordable.

We now use the term “wallcoverings” to describe this product, mostly because the product is made from many materials including paper, vinyl, and other compounds. These new ideas for wallpaper mean that there is a wide range of products and patterns that will meet the needs of almost every room in the house. Whether your style is modern, traditional, rustic, or casual, there are wallpaper patterns and colors available to make you pine for papered walls.

Wallpaper Options

Similar to painting a room, wallpaper is an immediate way to change the look and feel of your space from top to bottom. Wallcoverings have the extra bonus of adding texture to the walls, either as faux texture or as actual three dimensional paper. Even grasscloth is fashionable again.

The resurgence of wallpaper in interior design has a lot to do with the flexibility of the product to withstand cleanings and daily wear and tear. What’s more, the myriad of available patterns and colorways is truly inspiring, no matter what your personal style may be. There are also many themes covered with wallpaper designs such as Tuscan landscapes or fairy princesses, so that you can showcase your desired motif.

New ideas for wallpaper include using wallcoverings for entire rooms, just on focal walls, or as appliqué accents on painted walls. You will marvel at the designer wallpapers which are hand-painted or embellished with beads and crystals. Metallic finishes in gold, bronze, copper, and silver are one other must-see item at your local wallpaper design studio. Realistic photo quality murals and hand-painted look murals are available at great price points, so we can all enjoy a mural in our favorite room.

For texture, try using one of these types of wallpaper:

  • Grasscloth
  • Reedcloth
  • Jute weave
  • Flocked
  • Embossed
  • Anaglypta or Lincrusta (usually painted after being hung up)

Unique wallpaper products:

  • Wall-size murals
  • Accent murals
  • Borders with shaped or cut edges
  • Large-scale borders
  • Appliqués or cutouts
  • Tromp l'oeil murals
  • Hand-painted or hand-printed (beautiful but expensive!)
  • Designer wallpaper
  • Licensed designs from Disney, Nascar, etc.
  • Wallpaper for ceilings (replicates ceiling tiles)

Hello there, I was watching a home show feature a few months back and as I am now in the process of redoing one of our bathrooms . . . am looking for a wall treatment (sort of a piece-meal wallpaper) that I saw on the show. It is a wall paper system that is kind of like paper mache or putting an overlapping collage on the wall. The sheets of wallpaper come in mostly circles and squares, and came in a variety of colors and textures. Essentially, you just dip them in water, put them on the wall and do that over and over until the wall is covered. I have been able to find the kiddie type stuff (wallies). . . but not the more luxurious, contemporary (adult) decor. Please help if you can.

Thanks, Daniel Newman
