Playroom Ideas
From LoveToKnow Interior Design
Deciding between the many playroom ideas can be more difficult than the actual decorating. A child’s playroom is the one area in your home where you can let your imagination go wild.
Make It Easy to Maintain
Children can be hard on furniture and other items so you will want the playroom to be easy to maintain. Any furniture in it should be slip-covered with a durable fabric like canvas or denim, or it should have a surface that can be wiped off. Floors should also be an easy to clean material like vinyl or tile.
- Child sized furniture is a big plus in making your playroom an inviting space.
- Bean bag chairs are comfortable for playing video games, reading, or watching television. They can be moved from one place to the next easily and they are usually easy to clean. These things make them a great choice for the playroom.
- Laminate tables and chairs give children a place to color, play with play-dough or do crafts.
- Baskets, or plastic bins on shelves make perfect storage.
- Rugs should be easy to clean and/or a sculpted neutral so that they don’t show dirt.
- Use a paint that is created especially for children’s areas. Disney has a paint geared for children’s areas that is available at Home Depot. You can wash it and even scrub it if necessary.
Make It Colorful with Paint
Children love bright colors and whimsical designs. Playroom ideas that include lots of primary colors not only appeal to children but they also are better at covering fingerprints and dirt. The playroom is a great place to use bright blues, emerald greens, and lemon yellows.
If you are going to paint the walls two colors, or more, it is generally more visually appealing to keep the lower part of the walls the darkest color and the highest part of the walls the lightest color. In the same way, if you are painting the walls different colors then the widest walls look better with the darker colors. This gives the room a more spacious look.
A fun idea, especially if the room is going to be used at night is glow in the dark paint. You can’t see it when the room is light but when the lights go out the room comes alive with the glow in the dark designs you have painted. This is wonderful for space themed playroom ideas.
Chalkboard paint can be used to create a chalkboard space or to make a whole wall a blackboard that can be written on with chalk. This is a good way to deal with those “wall writers” that seem to be intent on decorating every inch of the wall with something. The chalkboard area can be used for handwriting practices, drawings, or notes. When your child is finished he can just wipe it away and start over.
Stencils and Murals
Even if you have no artistic ability at all you can create wonderful effects with specialty stencils and murals. Create a fairy kingdom or an undersea adventure that piques your child’s imagination every time he enters the room. Playroom ideas and inspirations are endless with all of the available specialty items on the Internet.
Some of these stencils and other items can be found on the Internet at the following locations:
- Paint by number wall murals are easy to do. This website has many different designs.
- Easy to apply murals are peel and stick simple. They are also washable.
- Trompe l’Oeil murals are a fun way to change the look of room from average to amazing.
- Stencils by Nancy has several children’s designs.

Children benefit from having a special place of their own. With some paint and some imagination you can create a child friendly space in a short period of time.
