Rooster Home Decor

From LoveToKnow Interior Design

When most people think of rooster home decor, they think of a country French, casual style. The truth is, roosters are favorite motifs in many styles, as well as vintages, of decorating. Many cultures consider the rooster to be a harbinger of good luck and good fortune. Regardless of whether or not that is true, the charm of rooster accents will never go out of style. The rooster motif can be used in nearly any area of the house and its' popularity crosses cultures and decades. Find it on everything from teapots to flannel sheets, and in every type of home.

Americana

Achieve an Americana, or rustic style, through the addition of some well-placed roosters. Look for vintage pieces to add to the collection. Often, you will find old advertising in magazines that features roosters. For a small sum, you can have the ad framed as a unique and individual conversation piece. Decorate with large milk cans, calendars, tea towels, and aprons.

Americana kitchen decor is probably the most popular place to use the colorful bird. Here, of all places, it exudes warmth with a country welcome. Roosters add nostalgic accents in the form of wallpaper or border, vintage teapots, pictures, and even cabinet pulls.

Because they are so colorful, it is easy to coordinate the kitchen around a rooster collection, printed wallpaper, or a painting. A country red kitchen seems almost unfinished without a few roosters decorating the tops of the cabinets, the wallpaper or a throw rug on the floor. If you collect Depression glass, adding an opaline, jadite, or EAPG (Early American Pressed Glass) rooster or two can be the finishing touch to the room.

A red work quilt with a rooster theme is perfect thrown casually over a comfy chair. Stack some old poultry breeders’ books, or a photographic collection nearby. When you are using a rooster theme in your room, be bold! One small piece will look apologetic, and out of place, while strewing roosters everywhere will make a statement.

Country French

French country decorating almost demands rooster home décor. The style came into vogue in the early 1980s, and has not gone out of favor since. Country French decorating uses rustic, warm red like the Americana style but adds a golden yellow to spice it up, rather than the cool Americana blue. These colors embrace the colors of the chanticleer in all of his country French glory.

For this look, a balance of delicate and sturdy is the key. A primitive pine farm table with crackle painted legs holds a rooster salt and pepper set placed on a beautiful length of lace. Needlepointed rooster throw pillows are at home on an overstuffed, worn sofa, while a colorful rooster planter does duty as an umbrella holder by the door. French country curtains are held gracefully with rooster tiebacks. Place a large rooster figurine under a bentwood and cane chair and toss a small theme throw rug casually at the feet.

  • Dollar store
  • Antique store

There are many excellent sources for both new, and collectible, roosters on the Internet:

Some of the rooster theme items that people often collect are:

  • Pie birds
  • Salt and pepper shakers
  • Chalkware figurines
  • Depression glass
  • Poultry advertisements
  • Copper molds
  • Chocolate molds
  • Vintage linens

When you collect roosters, it is best to display them in groupings. Depending on the size of your collection, you may want to change the display with the seasons. You can display figurines and kitchen collectibles on the top of cupboards, in glass front cupboards, and on (and under) Hoosier cabinets. In other rooms, fireplace mantles, curios, windowsills, and tables are all good locations for collections. Most of all, have fun with rooster home decor, a whimsical, casual way to adorn your home.
