Rustic Contemporary Interior Design

From LoveToKnow Interior Design

One of the newest home décor trends is the seemingly contradictory idea of rustic contemporary interior design. While people typically associate rustic design with older, country-style elements and contemporary design with modern glass and metal, it is not correct to think that rustic and contemporary design elements cannot be complementary. Quite the contrary, combining rustic and contemporary design elements is a very creative decorating technique.

Decorating for Individuality

When you are decorating your home, choosing décor that represents your personal sense of style is much more important than sticking with a singular decorating style throughout every room. Combining different styles of design can be one of the best ways to create a home environment that is uniquely yours.

Your home décor should reflect your personality and taste. Including both rustic and contemporary elements in your home can be the perfect way to reflect your appreciation for both modern and traditional design throughout your home.

Learning More About Rustic Contemporary Décor

Many people associate the word rustic with log cabins and fishing camps. However, rustic décor can be just as appropriate in a modern, contemporary home as it is in a cottage in the woods. Rustic pieces work very well side by side with sleek contemporary décor. The term rustic is more about bringing elements of nature into your home with a palette of warm, relaxing earth tones and natural materials than it is about an outdoorsy lifestyle.

To learn more about what rustic contemporary interior design is and how you can bring it into your home, you may want to read Modern Rustic: Natural Ideas for a Contemporary Lifestyle by British design writer Ali Hanan. This book explores the evolution of rustic décor from its origins to its place in contemporary 21st Century design. The book includes photographs of rustic contemporary décor, along with ideas for easy, do-it-yourself decorating projects.

Another excellent book for those interested in learning more about combining rustic and contemporary design is Rustic Revisited: Innovative Design for Cabin, Camp, and Lodge by Ann S. O'Leary. This book features thirty real homes across America, each of which is decorated in rustic contemporary style. The book’s stunning photography, by architectural and interior design photographer Andrew Wellman, brings this unique approach to design to life. It is an excellent resource for anyone seeking inspiration for their own home décor.

Rustic Contemporary Interior Design Makeovers

The Home and Garden Television (HGTV) program ‘’Kitchen Design’’ recently showcased a rustic contemporary home in California. The featured home underwent a massive remodel to update its 1970’s kitchen. The owners chose to combine rustic materials such as exposed ceiling beams, slate flooring, and butcher block countertops with contemporary stainless steel appliances, blue plastic laminate cabinets, and glass shelving. The end result is a beautiful and serviceable contemporary kitchen with a cozy rustic feel.

Another popular HGTV program, Decorating Cents, also featured a rustic contemporary interior design remodel of a bachelor pad. Designers combined the resident’s well worn, hand-me down furniture with contemporary design elements such as copper piping, bright purple walls, and a custom vinyl rug to create a delightful space that is both contemporary and rustic.

Incorporating Rustic Décor into Your Home

If you are ready to investigate brining rustic contemporary design elements into your home, there are a number of excellent resources for types of accessories you will need. Remember that contemporary design is all about smooth surfaces, such as stainless steel and glass, combined with bold color. Rustic décor is about bringing the outdoors in, with wood, natural stone surfaces, wrought iron and earth tones. Combing elements of both can result in a comfortable and attractive home that mixes the best of the old and the new under one roof.

Hello,

My company has been developing and wholesaling Rustic Contemporary Decor since 1998. Our line is made from recycled and sustainable woods. This line is especially in vogue with consumer concerns about the environment. Both the green aspect and the appeal of a softened edge to an otherwise cold modern setting are appealing to consumers. I find our organic consoles and coffee tables used with modern Italian sofas. Take a look at asianartimports.com. Any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you, Wally Stryk owner
