Spa Bathroom Décor

From LoveToKnow Interior Design

Spa bath décor is growing in popularity as more and more people turn their attention to creating a retreat within their homes.

Your spa can be elegant or rustic.

Creating Your Spa Bath Décor

It’s easy to create a spa-like feel to your bathroom when you add high-end materials with your new features. Many of the features found in spa baths are often considered luxuries such as a towel warmer or radiant heat flooring. To achieve a spa bath, you need to turn your attention away from minimal function to the idea of pampering yourself.

When you enter your spa bathroom, you want to leave the worries and cares of daily life outside the bathroom door.

Deciding What You Want

The biggest and most difficult decision you’ll have to make is what to include in your spa retreat bathroom. This means you need to determine what kind of spa you wish to create. Will this be a spa that’s centered on a jetted tub or will your focus be on a steam shower or sauna.

First make a wish list and include everything you ever wanted in a spa bathroom. At this point don’t limit yourself with concerns such as budget or size of your room. This is going to be a list that represents your ideal spa bath. Below is a list to help get you started in the thinking process of what might be found in your personal spa bath.

Your Wish List

Sauna

  • Pre-built or portable
  • Infrared
    • Temperatures range between 105° to 140°
  • Traditional
    • Dry or steam sauna
    • Temperatures range between 140° to 190°
  • Traditional and Infrared Combination
    • Enjoy both kinds of sauna

Steam Shower

  • Great addition to a home spa. Some models come as steam rooms to maximize functionality. You can even install a vitamin C steam shower.
  • You can retro fit your current shower but will need professionals to assist you.

Fireplace

  • Wonderful addition to create a relaxing atmosphere
  • Opt for remotely controlled gas logs for genuine pampering

Lounge Chair

  • A place to relax after a manicure or hair treatment

Dressing Area

  • Built-in or stand alone vanities
  • Chair or bench can be in any fabric you desire

Spa Tub

  • Garden Jetted
  • Jacuzzi
  • Hot Tub

Storage for Spa Products

  • May need to add more shelving or storage space

Towel Warming Rack

  • Wall Mount
  • Floor Mount

Radiant Heat Flooring

  • No more cold floors

Entertainment Unit

  • State of the art built-in TV and Music center, of course, all remote controlled

Candles, incense and infused aromas

  • Scented candles in accent colors, incense burning in a small Zen tray garden or bamboo sticks infused with scented oil

Fixtures and Surface Materials

Now that you’ve decided on the features to include in your wish list, you need to consider your design options.

Create another list and once you’ve made your selections, once more price out each item.

  • Lighting – Recessed, wall scones, table lamps
  • Bath Fixtures – Brass, cooper, chrome, antiqued or gloss finishes
  • Tile – Marble, ceramic, slate, granite, other stone
  • Wall Treatment – Wallcovering, tile, paint
  • Window Treatment – Blinds, shutters, shades, draperies, curtains, valances
  • Countertops – Marble, granite, tile
  • Water Closet – Include a bidet if enough space
  • Shower Stall Designs – Glass enclosures, step-ins with glass brick walls, many choices
  • Linen Closet – Additional storage always needed
  • Cabinets – Stained or painted
  • Mirrors – Framed or unframed

Making Tough Decisions

You now have a very long list of everything you wish to include. It’s now time to make tough decisions based on space and income. If your bathroom is not large enough to accommodate all of the items on your wish list and your budget or space won’t allow for adding more square footage to your bathroom, you’ll need to prioritize the items on your wish list.

Decide what your ideal spa bath would include.

Where To Start

Start with the most cherished new feature you desire for your new spa bath. Work your way through your wish list until you have managed to place the items in order of priority.

Pricing Out Your Wish List

  • This is the part that will take a consider amount of time because you want to do a price comparison of at least three suppliers for each items. If buying online be sure to include shipping costs in your final total.

Making Choices

  • Now that you have priced out all of your wish list items, you have a solid idea of the cost of materials minus labor. It’s time to make a decision on what you can actually afford and include in the overall design of your new spa bathroom.

Designing Tips

Here are a few design tips to help you in making selections for your spa.

Decide on theme

  • Style of spa
    • Mountain Rustic
    • Traditional Elegant
    • Modern
    • Italian Renaissance
    • Asian

Color Is Everything

  • Select three colors you want in your design and use one as an accent color to splash color throughout the room.
  • Make sure there’s continuity between your master bedroom and your new spa bath

Designed For You

  • If you can’t find exactly what you want in cabinet design, consider the additional expense of custom made cabinets. This is not something you will be changing for many years, if at all, so it would be a good investment.

Get Samples

  • Ask for a sample of flooring, wallcovering, paint, and any other materials you are selecting. Colors look differently once you get them home due to the difference in lighting.

Putting It All Together

Now that you’ve selected all of your spa features and fixtures and priced them out to get the best possible deal, you’ll need professionals to transform your bathroom into your ideal spa décor.
