Make a Plan

As we always try to ram home here at LTK Interior Design, before you start any design project, you need to make a plan. When you’re decorating children’s rooms, you should try and include them in the design process in an age appropriate way. For younger kids, talk to them about their favorite sports or favorite teams to get some ideas for what to include in the room. Older boys can help pick out colors, furniture, and accessories.

Another important part of your planning process is to make a budget. Going shopping armed with just a credit card and some vague ideas can be disastrous on two fronts; you’ll end up spending way too much money, and you’ll end up buying the wrong things. Come with a reasonable budget for the entire project and then for each portion of the project – paint, bedding, accessories, etc.

Race Cars

Be it NASCAR, Formula 1, or just fast cars in general, race cars make a great theme for boys’ bedrooms. The NASCAR store has plenty of options for bedding and accessories and you can also find NASCAR themed goods in many department stores like Sears and J.C. Penny. Younger boys especially love race car beds, like this one from Target. If you boy has a favorite racer or favorite car, incorporate these into the bedroom through accessories like pillows and curtains.

Football

Football is a great sports theme choice because there is just so much out there to choose from. If you child loves a specific NFL team or college football team, you can count on the team offering enough themed merchandise to kit your room out in style, with some left over. If you want a more general football theme, you can find everything to sheets and curtains with footballs to football shaped light switches. Fun touches include painting the walls and trim in your child’s favorite’s team’s colors, hanging team game schedules from past seasons on the walls, and filling a frame with ticket stubs from various football events.

Basketball

Like football, there are lots of options out there if you choose basketball as the sport theme for your boy’s bedroom. Center your decorating on a favorite team, a favorite player, or simply the sport itself. Don’t forget to include an indoor basketball hoop!

Baseball

Baseball is yet another sport with a plethora of merchandise on the market, and you can decorate boys’ rooms with baseball themes in much the same manner you would basketball and football. With baseball, however, one unique spin on the theme would be to use baseball’s history as your inspiration. Think wooden bats, old team jerseys, and black and white photos of old ballparks and legendary ball players. Frame baseball cards for wall art. Ebay is a great resource for old sports memorabilia – give them a try for your decorating needs.
