Teenage Room Themes
From LoveToKnow Interior Design
Teenage room themes often have to walk a careful line between teenage creative ideas and what is acceptable to mom and dad. There are plenty of teenage room themes you can turn to that everyone will be happy with – teens will have a great space to call their own, and parents won’t be tearing their hair out worrying about how they will ever show anyone that room again.
Teenage Decorating – How to Keep the Peace
What does your teenager have in mind for their room? If you’ve been avoiding asking because you’re sure they’re going to say black walls and red lights, it’s time to have the conversation. If you involve your teenager in the design process, you might be pleasantly surprised about the kinds of compromises they will be willing to make. All any teen really wants is to feel like their opinions are being considered and that they have a room that reflects their styles and tastes to some degree. If you approach the room design as though you are embarking on a project together, and if you are willing to engage in a little bit of give and take, then you will end up with a room that both you and your teen will feel proud of.
Teen Room Themes – Decorating How-Tos
Teenage decorating can be one of the trickiest kinds of decorating to do. Teens are in that in between stage. They’re certainly not babies any more, but they’re not quite adults yet either. When you are coming up with themes and design strategies for your teen’s room, it’s a good idea to look for ideas and themes that can grow with your teen. If you look for ideas that can grow with your teen, it will save you the money and hassle involved in re-doing as your teen continues to mature and their tastes change.
There are two main ways to make sure the room theme you pick for your teen will grow with them. One is to avoid picking any trendy or fad inspired theme. For instance, if a certain movie character or music star is in style now, that doesn’t mean your teen will want bedding inspired by that character a few months down the line. Classic styles, with touches of modern flair, are usually the best way to go.
The second way to create a room theme that stands the test of time is to limit your use of trendy pieces to the accessories. Taking the example of a popular movie character, if your teen wants to include that character in their room theme somehow, you can incorporate pillows, blankets, or posters with that theme. These things can be easily removed when your teen tires of looking at them!
Teenage Room Ideas
There are tons of different directions you can take when designing a room for your teenager – your imagination is your limit! These ideas should help get your creative juices flowing:
- Big City Style – Create a room inspired by your teen’s big city destination of choice, like New York, London, or Paris. Include framed photos of the city – black and white photos make a nice touch. Accessorize with knick knacks reminiscent of their city of choice, like model red phone boxes for London, rod iron models of the Eiffel tower for Paris, or Statue of Liberty models for New York.
- The Music Room – For your teen music fan, create a little musical oasis for them. If they play an instrument, turn a section of the room into a practice area with a music stand and a place to keep their instrument out on display. Cover the walls with posters of their favorite bands and cool, retro rock posters you can find online or at good record stores. You can even hang 45s or CDs from the ceiling – and a disco ball makes a nice finishing touch.
- Little Surfer, Little Girl (or Boy) – Teens love being at the beach and playing in the ocean, so a surfing theme makes a great choice for their bedrooms. Tiki wood and bamboo furniture get things started – include tropical inspired bedding, fairy lights to give the room a “sunset” feel, and if you’re feeling especially adventurous, hang a surfboard on the wall.
