Types of Interior Design Programs

There are many options available to those seeking to study at one of the top interior design programs. In addition to four-year colleges, there are also other options like online design schools and study-at-home programs. A lot of design students look for degree plans which have been accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation, formerly called FIDER. New students should also be aware that each state has different requirements for the education and licensing of designers and decorators. Check with county and state agencies before enrolling in a design program to make sure your degree will comply with local regulations. The American Society of Interior Designers, ASID, is another resource for researching top interior design programs and state compliance issues.

The first step is to decide what type of degree you would like to pursue. Various community colleges offer certificate programs in interior design and home decorating. This type of program will likely take less time than a formal degree plan and will be less expensive as well. The next level up is the two-year associate degree which can be found at numerous colleges and universities. Most design students will look for a bachelor degree plan which includes a professional interior design internship. For those designers who currently have undergraduate degrees, consider furthering your education with a masters or doctorate in interior design.
