What is Wholesale Furniture?

Buying wholesale furniture is buying furniture directly from the importer or manufacturer, thus saving the markups added by the retailers and the transportation costs to get the furniture to the retail stores. Though not right for everyone, wholesale furniture is a great option for buyers who know exactly what they want and need little design assistance.

Advantages to Buying Furniture Wholesale

  • Price – The primary advantage to buying furniture from a wholesale broker is price. The savings can be significant – up to 70 percent off of suggested retail pricing.
  • Selection – If you are searching for one manufacturer's pieces, the selection at their outlet store may be greater than you'd typically find at a multi-line retail store.

Disadvantages of Buying Wholesale Furniture

  • Cash and Carry – Many furniture outlet stores require that you take your purchases with you. Depending on the size of the pieces, this could mean renting a truck or a van.
  • Shipping Charges – For online brokers, be careful to get the total with shipping before you complete the transaction. Shipping charges for large and heavy items may negate your savings.
  • Little Design Help – Few wholesale furniture brokers – either online or in warehouses, offer design help. Go to the store with a good idea of the colors, fabrics, and styles that interest you.
  • Selection – Depending on where you shop, the selection may be limited to last year's items, items that didn't sell in the retail stores, or the furniture of just one manufacturer.

Where to Shop for Wholesale Furniture

Shopping for furniture at wholesale outlets requires a little skill and patience. The first store you visit may not have the pieces or the style you are seeking. In addition, quality and price can vary significantly among furniture wholesale vendors. To shop for wholesale furniture, visit the following:

  • Online Wholesale Furniture Vendors – Some furniture brokers bypass the retailer stores entirely and sell directly to the public online. Some of these brokers may be found on retail platforms, such as eBay. Others are listed in directories, such as wholesale furniture brokers.com.
  • Furniture Outlet Stores -- Highpoint, North Carolina is the furniture capital of the United States. The area boasts dozens of furniture outlet stores, specializing in every style from traditional to modern. Savings are significant, but services, such as shipping and design help, are generally limited. For a complete listing of High Point area furniture outlets, click here.
  • Regional Discount Outlets – In addition to the outlets in North Carolina, regional outlet malls frequently include furniture outlets. Major retailers, such as Pottery Barn, have furniture outlets in outlet centers throughout the country. Members-only stores, such as Sam's Clubs also feature a large selection of furniture at wholesale prices.
