Kitchen Lighting Fixtures

Kitchen Lighting Ideas

Kitchen lighting fixtures are very important to the style and functionality of the busiest room in the house. The kitchen is the heart of the home. It's where people gather to prepare meals, do homework, take care of household bills, and gather together to discuss their lives. It's important that the room be functional, stylish, and a place where people want to spend their time.

There are four types of lighting that need to be considered: task, accent, ambient, and decorative.

  • Task lighting is important to have in food preparation areas where you use sharp knives and need to measure precise ingredients.
  • Accent lighting is used to add depth and dimension to the space. It can be used to highlight specific areas and draw the eye to focal points.
  • Ambient lighting provides a soft glow and is generally considered to be the most flattering light. It softens shadows and casts a warm and cozy glow throughout the room.
  • Decorative lights are used more as accents than as lighting. A pretty lamp or wall sconce that doesn't actually provide a lot of useful lighting would fall into this category. There isn't often a lot of extra space in kitchens for decorative lighting, but occasionally people will include some.

The best thing to do is to have a combination of different types of lights. That way you can have practical, focused light while still achieving a soft, ambient glow.

Types of Kitchen Lighting Fixtures

There are many different types of fixtures that can be used in a kitchen. Here are some of the most common:

Overhead Lighting

Overhead lighting is the most common type of light. It casts a glow over the whole room. There are many different types of overhead lights including pot lights, track lights, pendants, and chandeliers. Pot and track lights can be focused on different areas of the room providing task lighting to specific areas while the others are concentrated in a single area.

Kitchen Island Lighting

If you have a kitchen island you likely do a lot of food preparation there. This is why many people install lights above them. It provides task lighting and it can also draw attention to the beautiful marble or granite that's often found on top of them. Most kitchen island lighting is made up of one or a few pendants hung directly above it.

Under Cabinet Lighting

Under cabinet lighting is a very popular form of task lighting. It's not always considered the most attractive, but it provides focused light where it's most needed. Some people use fluorescent lights, but since these often provide harsh light you might want to go with under counter pot lights instead.

Where to Buy Kitchen Lighting

There are a lot of different places to buy kitchen lighting fixtures depending on where you live. Home improvement stores like the Home Depot and Lowes always have a good selection. You can also visit lighting and/ or kitchen stores in your area. If you can't find anything you like, try checking online. There are tons of online companies that sell kitchen fixtures, and the selection is huge. If you do a quick Internet search, you'll get results based on your location.

When buying light fixtures for your kitchen remember to get ones that will compliment or enhance the style of your kitchen, but don't be afraid to think outside the box. A vintage crystal chandelier can be a real standout in a contemporary kitchen, just as a simple drum-shade pendant can pull a traditionally styled kitchen together. Just be sure that you choose lighting that looks good and provides the light you need.
